Payout Perspective:
TUF was the only FX show to crack the top 100 cable shows for Friday night. Another week and another down rating for the TUF series. It will be interesting to see if Jones-Sonnen coaching the next season of TUF will revive the interest.

HORRIBLE RATINGS

Facts like that sure isnt going to help TUF numbers. When you have no one on a network all day it is going to effect ratings. No lead in or anything to get eyes on the network. Thats not an excuse for the ratings being bad. We all knew it was coming. But it does show that TUF was thrown out on an Island with no help. Fridays are bad enough but even a popular sitcom rerun would have got some eyes that would have stayed for TUF.

FOX figured that the UFC’s social media presence would be enough to drive viewers in. Nielsen is an outdated system anyhow.
jose says
Fans of shows with poor ratings always complain the Nielsen system is out-dated.
But that’s just ignorance talking. The TV ratings do a good job of measuring which shows are popular and which are not.

I was looking forward to a nice excuse from Brain Smasher …

Given how stale TUF has become over the years, I’m surprised there are even 676K bothering to watch it. I don’t know any MMA fan who cares about TUF anymore. It’s played out, run it’s course.
And I don’t think Jones and Sonnen’s presence in the next season will do much help. People will be interested in that fight, yes, but not in TUF because of it. MMA/UFC is no longer a can’t miss thing. Like in any other sport, fans like certain fighters now, not the entire game. That is the main reason for UFC’s decline, fans are more selective of who they want to se fight. Any fight no longer floats the boat. That’s like expecting NFL fans to follow every team in the NFL. It doesn’t work that way.
Sampson Simpson says
When you compare analytical measurements of Nielsen incomparison to web analytics… There is no comparison.
100,000 sample out of 115 million equals a good job of measuring? What is this… 1984?
Im hardly a fan of UFC or TUF but this measurement system is ridiculously antiquated

It’s called statistics. You need a surprisingly small sample to discover facts about very large populations. Well, it’s surprising to someone who’s never studied statistics.
If you’ve ever taken a probability and stats class it shouldn’t be that hard to understand why and how the tv ratings system works.

Yeah jose, neilson is bogus. I know plenty about statistics, that doesn’t make all examples of statistics accurate. I have been vocal about all the mistakes and downward trend the UFC is taking, but neilson is absolute crap.
Jose is one of those guys who learns a concept in university than thinks it works perfectly in the world. Next he will say prices or how much someone gets paid are 100% always based on supply and demand.
One example before someone stupid tries to argue that supply & demand is always in effect is large animal veterinarians. Highly in demand, very poorly paid. Much better to open up a vet clinic in the suburbs or city if you plan on paying off your loans and living well. But I’m sure jose took an economics class once so it can’t be true…
BrainSmasher says
I don’t think Nielson is even close to being right. But it’s about the best that can be done without putting a tracking device in every tv. Which you think would have been done by now.
A question I have which might be a flaw in nelson is this. Wouldnt it throw off the data of a demographic or geographic region was under represented? Say Ohio only has 10 of the 100,000 tracked. Let’s say Ohio is a huge MMA state and they are 100 ti
Es more likely to watch MMA. But they ha e no effect on ratings because only 10 people were tracked. It doesn’t effluence the national ratings even though there could have been million in that state watching. Nelson is only accurate if all parts of the country have the same viewing pattern. But as we see with MMA some areas are hot beds for the sport. Even though they are not the most populated areas they have a higher concentration of fans. But if those who are tracked are based on population then a large size of those viewers won’t be counted in the ratings. but I guess it depends on how they tally them up. If they do it city by city it would be pretty accurate if it’s done nationally then it is t even close IMO.

Nielson ratings were right when the TUF numbers were great and MMA numbers were breaking records, now that the numbers are in the toilet the Nielson is flawed.

Truth of the matter is… TUF is in the toilet in terms of viewership.
Truth is also that 100,000 sample out of a potential 115 million households is absolutely garbage in terms of accuracy and sample size for 2012. For 1980s it might be ok but now that we live in an era of being able to see exactly how many times an online video was seen, on what specific device, in what specific part of the world, exactly how much of each video was seen, and what was the clickstream leading up to the video view… Yes, i believe you can safely state that Nielsen TV ratings are vastly innacurate.

It doesn’t really matter if Nielsen’s ratings are flawed or not. It is the system that is used and by which all other programs are measured. if TUF had a lot of viewers it would show up in the Nielsen numbers. And even if you disregard Nielsen, look at different mma forums. almost everyone is saying TUF sucks and they don’t watch it anymore. Personally I hope they cancel the garbage.
Sampson Simpson says
It matters if the discussion is bigger picture accuracy.
It doesnt matter if you live in a Zuffa world. TINY!
