UFC officials, Griffin make appearance at LGBTQ groundbreaking ceremony

August 7, 2012 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

MMA Junkie reports that Forrest Griffin and UFC officials made an appearance at the groundbreaking of a LGBTQ Community Center in Las Vegas.  Zuffa, LLC is one of the initial donors to the center.

The comments made by UFC rep Reed Harris and Griffin do not address the sexual orientation issue, but on the mission of the center to promote “human rights” and promoting “programs for health and wellness.”

Via MMA Junkie:

“It’s always nice to be involved in any project that’s helping to make Las Vegas better,” Griffin said. “This is an impressive organization doing something worthwhile in a community that is both expanding and rebuilding. It’s always nice to see the UFC back the local community.”

Payout Perspective:

This is a good public relations activity for Zuffa and the UFC.  Not only does it reach out to the local community in Las Vegas, it reaches out to the LGBTQ community.  Undoubtedly, the UFC and its representatives (whether it be fighters, announcers or its head) have made off color comments about sexual orientation.  In addition, Griffin was the center of controversy for a questionable tweet about rape.

In what can be seen as a public relations move, Griffin made an appearance and put his face with the project.  Still, it’s a nice gesture by Griffin who could have passed on the appearance.  For Zuffa, it was interesting to not only contribute but to take part in the groundbreaking.  Certainly, one can argue that it’s just a photo op.  But, the subject behind the groundbreaking is controversial in some circles.  Here, Zuffa is taking a position despite trying to remain neutral.  Its contribution and support could smooth any issues the LGBTQ community may have had with the company for past transgressions.
