Payout Perspective:
Notably, Diaz and Werdum had flat fees for their work. Condit earned $110K with a $55K win bonus which means that he was only guaranteed $55K in a title fight. In comparison, Condit’s last fight before 143, he earned $34K plus $34K win bonus for a total of $68,000 (UFC 132 versus Dong Hyun Kim). Hopefully he received a locker room bonus for his fight. It looks like $6K was the bottom pay for the night for four fighters while three others received $8K.

Why would he get a “locker room” bonus? Why would you hope he does as opposed to anyone else?

I don’t think many people thought Condit would put on such a performance. He was ready, conditioned and had a great game plan. It was an entertaining fight and had folks arguing that each fighter won. So, if we are to believe the UFC in that they take care of their fighters. My theory is Condit got some love from the company.

Because he’s now the champ. And one would hope that UFC champions get taken care of financially even if they’re only champions for as long as it takes GSP to rehab his knee. It would be great if every single fighter got a nice fat bonus, but that’s unlikely.
We’ve all seen enough of UFC salary structures to know that there are substantial payments made that do not get reported to the commission. I would guess that both Nick and Condit got a share of the PPV, with could add a few hundred thousand dollars to their salary.

It’s interesting that both of the Strikeforce fighters have flat payment structures. I wonder if that’s a new direction the UFC is going with its contracts or maybe it signals that those two have a PPV share deal in place. I think Wanderlei also gets a flat fee.

Condit is interim champ and he just got that status. When has the UFC set a precedent of tearing up a contract? Confit is still on a old contract he got what he agreed to. As for bonus’ they don’t occur as often as people think. Certainly not after every win, short notice fight, or inconvenience a fighter has like people on here like to think. I think Condit should earn more pay. He was all but given the belt and fought no one and struggled verses everyone be fought. He got the Dan hardy treatment. Got a title shot while avoiding almost the entire top 5-10 guys. Now he should get a bonus. He already got his bonus.
Diego says
BS,
I’m not sure what it is about you that hates the thought of top athletes getting paid. If I’m understanding you correctly I disagree with everything you said. Now that he’s champ Condit should be getting a new contract. My guess is that he got a nice deal for this fight (before the new contract) simply because it was a main event, title fight on PPV. He probably would have gotten a nice deal if the GSP fight happened last year.
Like Jason said, he put in a great performance (that I personally didn’t like but I appreciate the skill and intelligence he showed) and is probably getting taken care of.

Jason.
The UFC said they take care of their fighters. In my opinion they do take care of their fighters. I think they believe that, the fighters believe that for the most part. The problem is what your definition of “taking care of the fighters” is. I think the money he made curtainly isnt slave wages. Do i look at that and say i feel sorry for him? No! not even close. I have seen guys take beatings and fight their ass off and see then get a few $4,000. I do feel sorry for them and those are the guys the UFC would cut a check for. Not for someone that a few people on the internet who think $110,000 isnt a lot of money.
As for the fight it was great. However i did expect him to fight like that. He didnt do anything out of the ordinary. I expected a close fight as both are indentical body types and skill sets. But i thought Condit would mix it up more and play less defense. That beign the case i felt he would win early with his speed but Diaz’ power, toughness winning late and maybe getting a stoppage or got to the judges for a coin toss decision. But seeing that his power and chin isnt what i thought it was Condit fought a smart fight. He did what it took to win. But how does that mean you should get a bonus? Thats what the win bonus is for. The UFC shouldnt give extra money for people doing what they are paid to do.
If i remember correctly there are only a handful of guys who get signicant bonus’ for their fights over the last 5 years. So where are all these bonus’ that have you and many others calling for them after each event? There is 1 fighters who got a huge bonus in the past. There are a few guys who Dana White personally felt compelled to give a win bonus even when they lost because the guy fought tough, got screwed by the judge or ref, or what ever. But this has only happed a hand full of times. Most of these are small amounts. Last one going to Erick Silva. But this only happens on VERY special occassions. Look up Rich Franklin an dhis contract status as Champ. He was paid peanuts because he he agreed to a long term deal before he was champ. The UFC didnt redo it and he was man enough to honor his agreement. Just because you or i have an opinion on what someone or a fight is worth doesnt mean the UFC will or should be pressured into giving more. Dana White has given bonus’s out as an extention of his appreciation to a fighter for one reason or another. To expect this or demand it is a disgrace and disrespectful to Dana White and the UFC imo. Dana is doing a good deed. Just like if you were to give something to the homeless and then i come along and say its not enough and start telling you when to do nate and how much. Now you are being punished because of your good deed.
That is why this is a such a pet peeve for me. If this was something Dana did to everyone people felt was under paid or for everyone who won or for every fighter who took a short notice fight or accepted a new opponent. Then that would be different. But that isnt the case. People are taking a good deed by Dana and devaluing it.
This is an attack at you Jason. this just seems to be a trend that many of the new generation of MMA fans are following.

Rich Franklin fought his first title defense on a 13,000/13,000 contract. His next defense he made 16,000/16,000, He was only on a 21,000 and 21,000 contract to get his face rearranged by Anderson Silva the first time. So where do you get these fantasy stories that the UFC tears up contracts after a title and pays people huge sums of money above their agreement? Franklin fought out his contract. even though he didnt have the belt and was a dead end fighter who could never fight for the belt again. The UFC give him a good contract when his expired. He made more as an exhibition fighter than as Champp and it isnt even close. 50/50 for Hamill,70/70 vs Chuck, 75/75 vs Forrest.
In the past the UFC would redo guys contracts who were fighting for the title so the winner couldnt leave with the belt. Now everyone has a champions clause. Unless their contract is up or they hold out i cant think of any cases where the UFC just tore up a contract and give someone a huge deal. Curtainly not for an interim champ who isnt a draw who hasnt beat anyone.

I meant “This is not an attack at you Jason”. I wish we could edit our messages.
