UFC Heavyweight Shane Carwin has been implicated in purchasing steroids from an Alabama pharmacy. Carwin’s name appears on orders for the illegal substances. Notably, former WWE professional wrestler, Kurt Angle is also on the list. According to court documents, the purchase of the steroids occurred sometime between April 4, 2004 and August 30, 2006.
Via mmamania.com:
Former number one UFC heavyweight contender, Shane Carwin, was named — along with six athletes — as a customer who purchased steroids from a Mobile, Ala., pharmacist who was sentenced Friday to a four-year prison term for participating in a nationwide conspiracy to sell the anabolic agent, according to AlabamaLive.com.
Payout Perspective:
Three important facts for Carwin when speaking to the press: 1. He has never failed a drug test in his professional fighting career; 2. His drug test for UFC 116 was clean; 3. Carwin did not start fighting in the UFC until 2008 and his name appears on the list sometime between April 2004 and August 2006. These are important talking points when addressing steroids with the press. It would also help if he has a talk with UFC officials to ensure them that he is clean.
Despite an impressive first round showing in his title fight with Brock Lesnar, this news will cast a shadow over Carwin. His likeable, nice-guy image will be replaced by thoughts that he cheated to get ahead. Plus, the negative media attention may hurt his chances for a return shot at the Heavyweight title. It may also hurt his reputation with UFC officials. Carwin needs to explain why his name is linked to the purchase of steroids and hopefully he has a good reason. Carwin’s management team must go into crisis PR mode to ensure that Carwin preserve his image.

I usually try to refrain from responding to comments like yours revee but for some reason I can’t stop myself this time. That is just all nonsense and B.S.
Eric says
Brock has never been arrested for steroid possession. Throwing names out is absurd if you don’t have a credible piece of evidence.

I don’t think talking to the UFC is an option. I would be willing to bet that the UFC lawyers will be in charge of this and Carwin will get billed for their time. There is a potential conflict of interest there but fighters really have no recourse any more.

I’m all for freedom of speech but is there a way to delete comments based on extreme stupidity?
Revee – if that is your real name – I think you may have wondered onto the wrong site, perhaps you were looking for sherdog.net/forums. I think you will find other posters there who are more your speed. Enjoy.

I think this will all blow over. Not having failed a test, it will be hard to punish Carwin for anything, and he should be back in the mix without too much fuss. If he had beaten Brock it would have been embarrassing for the UFC, but luckily for Zuffa Carwin’s atrocious cardio saved them from having to answer questions about their HW champion cheating.
Let’s not forget that James Toney has tested positive for steroids twice, and he’s about to headline a UFC card.

according to frank shamrock and hallman around 50 percent of mma fighters use steroids(at the very minimum)….i think these 2 know more than fans because they train and know the fighters themselves…
In January 2001, Lesnar was arrested for receiving large amounts of what was alleged to be steroids. The charges were later dropped when it was discovered the substances were in fact a growth hormone. His lawyer later described the growth hormone as a “vitamin type of thing—-revee was dead wrong acording to wikipedia its not steriods but GROWTH HORMONE lol big arms big forehead…..go figure….

Such a touchy issue… the bottom line is we don’t know what the outcome of the case is yet. It’s silly to quote even fighters who say things like “50% of mma fighters use steroids…” They don’t know that and neither do we. Any athlete can claim that other athletes are on the juice, think about it. There’s obviously people willing to listen, and they can just say things like “it’s just my opinion” to avoid any slander or libel (I’ll never forget BJ Penn making a video blog in which he said that Georges St. Pierre is on steroids, offering no evidence other than “he just looks like that all the time, it’s just my opinion.”) It’s just ridiculous because there is no way to know unless people are just horrible cheaters that actually get caught by rudimentary Athletic Commission PED/drug testing, which we all know is lacking but tough, that’s what’s in place.
Machiel Van says
It’s funny how everyone always demands olympic style testing, and bashes the athletic commission for not implementing it, however no one ever thinks about whether or not the commissions can PAY for such testing. As we are in a recession, I doubt they can afford to do anything beyond what they already do (small budget +good ol’ bureaucracy = a lot of mad MMA fans). The bureaucracy makes the commissions slow and inefficient (reality of government agencies), and the lack of funds severely limits their power.
Machiel Van says
It sucks but steroids will continue to be a grey are in athletics. I guess what’s important is to try and hold off judgement until people are proven guilty, even though the system to catch cheaters is flawed and many of them will slip through the cracks. Hey, people get away with breaking the rules in all areas of society, why do people think sports would be any different is beyond me. Trying to determine who is or is not juicing is like trying to catch P2P internet pirates: ain’t gonna happen anytime soon. If you can, try and reserve judgement on Carwin until we know the details and outcome of the case. Otherwise, realize that every athlete you’ve ever seen COULD be on steroids, but you wouldn’t know it anyway. It’s just a ridiculous cycle of pointlessness.
Revee, go back under your bridge, and don’t worry, we can hear your grumbling from under there.

just a question…why did the fans shout usa usa when anderson silva was fighting against chael sonnen….and they shouted usa usa against junior dos santos…they dont do that in NBA with yao ming or pau gasol…and they dont do that to pacman in boxing..they dont do that shouting with hispanics in baseball….anderson is the pound for pound best mma fighter right now..or at least top 3…
monmon says
and back on the steroid issue….why is Dana white against the commish on steroid testing for boxing? he’s with the ufc…..the answer is he is afraid that commish would start testing everybody with the olympic and a lot of ufc fighters would test positive….funny a lot of people dont know the brock arrest thou

Bobby Lashley sucks, period.
I am glad Griggs handed him his ass. Get these cheaters and former fake wrestlers out of my site. They deserve to earn what the cheaters of world’s strongest man, all steroid users, used to earn, nothing. These guys have been taking steroids, hgh, and anything else they can get their hands on to cheat. If Bobby Lashley was that big from naturally working out he would not get gassed out by round 1. Steroids stop glucocorticoids from allowing the immune system to strengthen muscle properly. I have met the guy. Huge biceps with tiny wrists with guitar string tendons. Any doctor can see he cheated to get where he is at. Steroids deposit fat, because we all need it like it or not, in the arteries and veins rather than deposits on stomach, etc. Bobby looks like he has no fat, steroid bullshit. We need to start testing by blood olympic style and not just piss tests. They should even do a fat cell check for steroids that would show who has been cheating for many years in the past. It does not matter the cost. The cost is me wasting time watching this pumped up loser fight who never should have been in Strikeforce to begin with. Get rid of the cheaters, you too UFC Shane Carwin federal scandal, or people are going elsewhere. Notice Carwin got gassed in round 1 as well, steroids. This goes for football, baseball, bicycling, etc. We are tired of the cheaters, and your pocketbooks are going to get a little smaller, mark my words. If Congress is listening, drop the hammer on these guys already, at least Olympic standard blood random tests. There are plenty of legit athletes ready to take their place. Maybe we can finally see who the real genetic God of War is, but not with lab created bullshit.
