Bellator Finds International Distribution Partner

March 26, 2010 by Kelsey Philpott Leave a Comment

Bellator Fighting Championships has announced the signing of an agreement with Engine Entertainment that will allow the company to distribute its television product in multiple international countries starting this year.

Bellator Fighting Championships aligns with Engine Entertainment
to distribute Bellator programming internationally

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – March 25, 2010 – The international production and distribution company Engine Entertainment has completed an agreement with Bellator Fighting Championships to handle the exclusive worldwide distribution (excluding US and Canada) for this first-of-its-kind mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion.

…

Engine Entertainment is exclusively distributing the twenty-four 2010 season live events, plus all additional premium pay-per-view events that Bellator produces, worldwide (outside of the US and Canada) as well as the twelve previously aired 2009 Bellator Season 1 shows.

Payout Perspective:

MMAPayout.com has been told that full details of the countries involved will be named at a later date.

Depending upon the size and number of agreements Engine is able to secure, the international agreements could make an impact on Bellator’s bottom-line due to the high margin nature of exporting a finished product into hungry foreign television markets.

However, from a brand perspective, the deal isn’t likely to be of tremendous value to the organization the short-term as its easy for products of this nature to get lost in the competitive deep water if there’s no follow-up support within the market. Though, certainly a higher international profile is beneficial down the road, if Bellator can manage to form a live event or consistent media presence in these markets.

People who do martial arts will laugh and tell me it’s fake. But then I ask them why they do martial arts? 😉

I should point out that according to those at TKO that the ESPN/MVPW boxing deal is a revenue sharing agreement similar to the original AEW/Turner deal in 2019 and not a full paying media rights deal which Top Rank had and wasn't renewed.
