WEC 46 ratings: Audience increases by 94 percent, 640,000 viewers tune in
With a star-studded card that featured a title-unification bout between Benson Henderson and Jamie Varner, WEC 46 on Versus experienced a ratings increase of 94 percent and drew a total audience of 640,000 viewers, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed with TV executives… The organization’s most recent show, WEC 45, drew just 330,000 viewers last month… (MMAjunkie)
With UFC’s Recent Moves, White’s Predictions Might Have Been Conservative
Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White got a lot of fans talking when he made predictions of grand expansion over the next ten years. And while White is often as guilty of hyperbole as the next promoter, his plan for global domination isn’t that outrageous. Especially not when you look closely at two of the company’s recent announcements… (Fight Magazine)
Herschel Walker ready for his ring challenge
That’s why it is worth waiting for Jan. 30 before declaring this a sideshow, like Kimbo Slice’s overhyped MMA foray. After all, many of us initially questioned the staying power of the sport itself. No longer. This deserves some benefit of the doubt, too. If the 47-year-old succeeds, especially as his competition improves, it won’t diminish MMA by suggesting that it’s easy. It will simply mean that the freakishly athletic and competitive Walker has worked harder (to capitalize on his superior genes) than other crossover athletes… (LA Times, Sun-Sentinel)
Herschel Walker earning his money with Strikeforce
He’s part fighter, part pitch man. Herschel Walker is making the media rounds in New York Wednesday and Thursday. That was after doing so in Miami on Tuesday on 790 The Ticket (Audio) and WQAM (Audio). The 47-year-old Heisman Trophy winner, who makes his MMA debut Jan. 30 in Sunrise, Fla., has been all over television and radio. There’s more to come the week of the fight which by no accident was placed the day before the Pro Bowl and the arrival of the participants in Super Bowl 44. … The media tour is working. Walker is the fifth most searched topic on Yahoo! as of 5:15 p.m. ET. (CageWriter)
A lull in the battle over ultimate fighting bill
Although the bill has not been taken up in the state Senate, Reilly said he plans to contact Gov. David Paterson and argue that it’s a bad idea despite the state’s economic woes. “This sport is so violent it’s no way to raise revenues,” Reilly said… Bob Belber, general manager of Times Union Center, has said he’d like to bring Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts to Albany, where a sellout would generate about $100,000 in county tax revenues… (Times Union)
