Updated: Randy Couture to face Brock Lesnar in the UFC

September 2, 2008 by Staff

In an on-going conference call, UFC President Dana White announced that Randy “The Natural” Couture will fight Brock Lesnar in an upcoming UFC pay per view for the Heavyweight title on Novemer 15th.

The original plan was to do this show live in Portland but that has been delayed, the fight will take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. Randy has signed a three fight contract with the UFC, terms not disclosed. Randy will face Brock for the title in a five round affair, while Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will face off in December for the interim title. The winners if these two fights will face off at a date yet to be determined.

On the Fedor vs Randy fight, Dana stated “If Fedor becomes available or if something can be done with his promotion we will make the Fedor fight. I don’t know if Fedor cares about his legacy but we are going to offer him a fair deal. If it means something to him to beat Randy let’s do this.” Couture stated “I still want to fight Fedor. I can’t speak for him. I don’t know what’s important for him but if he wants to be the #1 fighter in the world he needs to come fight me. I would rather be fighting Fedor in November but hopefully we will get there.”

Dana stated: “Mark my words, Couture vs. Lesnar will be the biggest fight in UFC history”. White anticpated over a million buys for Randy vs Brock, and he spoke of trying to get clearance from spike for a multi-part Countdown show (similar to HBO’s 24/7) in order to properly hype the event.
