Conor McGregor’s pay-per-view interview took place on Saturday. While I did not view the interview, he had a lot to say including keeping alive the dream of a Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight. As if coordinated by the two, Floyd Mayweather her with talk about the fight.
Of course, the two sides are just talking up a fight that may never happen.
Yet, Mayweather made it sound it could happen with the subtle proviso that it must be a Showtime PPV. Mayweather was being interviewed on the network during Showtime’s boxing event Saturday.
On his end, McGregor is attempting to burn his bridge with the UFC by coordinating this fight with Mayweather on his own. An Instagram post on Saturday included a rant in which he wrote “F*** the UFC.” Dana White responded that if he attempted to go without the UFC it would be an “epic fall” for McGregor.
Payout Perspective:
If you read between the lines, if you are hoping for a McGregor-Mayweather fight, expect a Zuffa lawsuit prior to that happening. In the alternative, you might expect the UFC to be a co-promoter for a hefty sum. Bottom line is that McGregor is under contract and he would be in breach of contract if he were to fight without the UFC’s permission. A potential lawsuit would come in the form of an injunction to prevent the fight from happening. Still, McGregor’s comments gives us something to talk about while he’s out on leave.

McTapper is gonna need that money for professional counseling when his career is over. Guy has mental issues and thinks he’s the richest man in the world.

This fight isn’t happening. Endless amounts of problems.
d says
It would be nice to see them meet half way though in the kickboxing arena, and watch McGregor kick Mayweather’s head off, but everyone knows Mayweather is too much of a coward for that.

“mma media seems to be deaf to it lol”
Not deaf to it. We’ve just heard this kind of crap before and it never amounted to anything. I hope the fight gets made. McGregor will get a nice easy payday. I’m not saying he’ll win, but it beats having to fight Nate Diaz a third time. And it might be interesting to watch. I won’t pay for the PPV, but I’ll definitely check out the replay the following week.

This reminds me of A. Silva v. Roy Jones Jr.

“https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M8_60YE0G-A another next ppv star mickey garcia”
He had a great night, but he’s a long way from a PPV “star”. First of all, he needs to get in the ring with someone who is known. No disrespect to Dejan, but he was 1-0 in title fights. Meaning he won one fight in an upset. If Mikey can keep blasting top dudes, he’ll build up his PPV profile. But he wasn’t even the main event of this card.
TOPS E says
Hahahaha…your part of mma media?

Kind of difficult to turn into a ppv star for a boxer. Lack of interest, too many fighters dodging each other, etc. Look at the numbers that Ward vs Kovalev did. They were pathetic. Those guys are damn good boxers. The sport in the US barely even has a pulse.
fight fan says
4 million buys says otherwise d. lol some pulse. Boxing holds the all time PPV records.
TOPS E says
Mickey garcia will have the same following as canelo alvares…cinco de mayo type of fighter, him against crawford or the 147s would do huge numbers
d says
FF, in 20 years you are going to be referring back to that one fight that is now over a year and a half old.
Boxing wishes it held the all time ppv records.
fight fan says
D what fight has UFC put on that topped that? LOL, the record is there my friend, PPV Buys, Gate etc all for the biggest fight ever which was a boxing match.
d says
Every year the UFC tops them. It isn’t even close. They hold the ppv record practically every year over the past decade too. Hahaha.
Wil says
I believe this one happens, way too much money involved not to. Both guys want the fight and clearly both are coordinating with each other to create the buzz. The beauty of what they are doing is they are taking both boxing fans and UFC fans and mixing in what will be an enormous casual fan base that doesn’t know any better who will all tune in…no matter what anyone says, we will ALL watch it. Which means Mayweather will clear at least 100M up front and McGregor will make anywhere from 15-30M up front with probably the entire ppv percentage from Ireland/UK…..and I can only imagine how much the gate will be for the MGM Grand
d says
Both guys may want the fight, but one is under a very rigid contract and there is a time table for how long this can go on for.
White isn’t on board with this unless it is entirely under his terms, so I don’t see how this match could possibly become a reality.
There’s no way the UFC would ever pay Mayweather 100m up front. I also can’t imagine the UFC allowing anyone else to distribute a fight with McGregor, so they would have to promote/distribute and front that purse. Something they would never pay out up front, not to mention Mayweather would never fight under those distribution conditions.
There are too many issues for this to go down. The UFC doesn’t co-promote, Mayweather would never allow another promoter/distributor exclusivity, the UFC won’t pay out 100m up front to anyone, White does not like the idea of his star being embarrassed in a boxing match, who the A is on the ppv, plus a variety of other factors.
White was correct when he said “Here’s what I think the chances are(for this fight occurring) — about the same as me being the back up quarterback for (Tom) Brady on Sunday”
