UFC 189 Prelims draw 847,000

July 14, 2015 by Jason Cruz 26 Comments

MMA Payout has learned from a Nielsen source that the UFC 189 Prelims drew 847,000 viewers on Fox Sports 1.  The ratings represent a modest increase from UFC 188 which aired on FX.

In the last fight of the UFC 189 Prelims, Matt Brown submitted Tim Means.  The event was the first UFC Prelims card to surpass 800,000 viewers since UFC 185.

UFC PPV Prelims
UFC 182 1,030,000
UFC 183 1,546,000
UFC 184 1,205,000
UFC 185 1,003,000
UFC 186 710,000
UFC 187 780,000
UFC 188 727,000
UFC 189 847,000

UFC PPV Prelims through 189

Payout Perspective:

If you want to take the Prelims card into account when factoring the PPV success, we might want to curb the expectations of 189’s buy rate.  The first four UFC Prelim cards drew over 1 million average viewers with 3 of those cards, UFC 182-UFC 184, doing well.  But, none of those PPVs drew 1 million buys and only UFC 182 hit 800,000.  While the rumor is that PPV pre-buys were tracking well as well as the searches, the Prelim cards are one of the indicators of PPV success.  So, we shall see in the coming days.

182 did less prelim ratings than 183 184 but did more buys than both.

189 isnt doing a million, never was once Mendes was out, think most projections were 600-750k. Think it hits that number nd if it does its huge for an interim FW title fight that had a main event change.

The prelim numbers are nearly irrelevant. There really isn’t any trend for them that computes to more or less ppv buys.

I was listening to Meltzer discuss his expectations for the buy rate and he discussed his initial prediction when it was scheduled at first between Aldo-McGregor. Back then he thought that fight would do 750k at most. When this fight came around though with Mendes, he implied the floor was 750k buys and it may have done over a million. He also said that McGregor-Aldo would be the biggest fight in UFC history- bigger than UFC 100.

Canelo-Cotto>>>Aldo-McGregor and its not even close.
Canelo-Cotto will both make over $10-15mil to fight each other. Their ppv will cost more and sell more than Aldo-McGregor.

Thurman-Collazo on ESPN averaged 999K and peaked at 1.2m.
    Not bad numbers.
I expect Garcia-Paulie to beat that out.

Hahaha. The mental patient is back with his delusions of grandeur and blatant lies. You are right, it won’t be close, because Aldo-McGregor will destroy Canelo-Cotto. Their ppv probably won’t cost more and it certainly won’t sell more. Go back to your padded walls.

    Thurman-Collazo averaged 799k viewers.

“Keith Thurman’s 8th round TKO victory over Luis Collazo under performed ratings wise. Per Sports TV ratings, the bout did a .3 on Saturday night for the debut of PBC on ESPN, only averaging 799,000 viewers.”

These are horrible numbers for an alleged star who was considered for a potential Mayweather fight. Nice try idiot.

The entire telecast averaged 799k but thats counting the Tony Harrison vs Willie Nelson bout.

Thurman-Collazos fight averaged 999k and peaked at 1.2m

But yea those numbers arent great BUT at the same time they are beating out Prelim numbers going at the same time for a so called major ppv(ufc 189).

Collazo isnt a name at all and is ranked 37th in the world.
Thurman is a name thats growing and hes 4th in the world, and a possible Kell Brook fight is in the making which means the Thurman train might come to a halt.

You are such an idiot. You take avg of the entire telecast for a ufc which has even more fights than boxing and you only use the headliner in boxing. Wow you are an idiot.

Keith Thurman is a big name boxer and a consistent headliner, comparing him with the UFC prelims is so stupid, I can’t believe anyone would take themselves seriously after claiming that. Not to mention of course, the boxing match was on ESPN and not FS1. Wait until boxing hits FS1 and their ratings are far below the UFC numbers.

The biggest star in mma just fought Saturday and he is a bigger star than anyone in boxing will be from here on out. It is amazing how much of a nutjob retard you are. Go enjoy your tranny promoters you freak.

d – that’s a good point. It will be interesting to see how PBC does on FS1 compared to Fight Night cards. That will give us an apples to apples comparison. Golden Boy has not done well ratings wise on FS1 but they have their shows on random nights with random headliners so it’s not fair to compare to a good UFC card.

It will also be interesting to see how many PPV buys Cotto-Canelo does. I have no doubt both fighters will get paid a lot (and good for them), but that’s partially because they are involved in promoting their own fights. The buy rates of that fight will say a lot about the (near) future of boxing PPVs.

Cotto is already on his way out – at this point in his career he’s fighting old men with bad knees and guys who are smaller than him – but Canelo can be a big PPV star, especially with the departures of Manny and Floyd from the PPV market and Marquez’ retirement leaves a void in Mexican boxing.

Hes not a star though. They are trying to make him a star but he just isnt one yet.
But McGregor is no where near as big as Canelo, Cotto, Klitschko, Mayweather, Pacquiao.

More people know who Bernard Hopkins is than McGregor.
McGregor isnt the star you guys think he is but I give Dana props for milking him by having him not fight Aldo yet and bringing more interest into it.

If he beats Aldo you might have something.

By the way McGregors base is boxing.

Bernard Hopkins is more well known than McGregor? If true then that’s sad for boxing. Has Bernard done a PPV since he fought De La Hoya? And it was Oscar who drove buys in that PPV.

It is amazing how much of an idiot you are.

Thurman is a big name boxer who headlined yet another under-performing PBC card.

You are delusional if you don’t think McGregor is a bigger star than Cotto, Klitschko and Canelo. Also, seeing how Mayweather and Pacquaio are retiring and will never sell another big ppv again, McGregor is a bigger draw than either of them are from here on out. McGregor may have just done a huge ppv with a backup opponent. What were Canelo’s numbers when he headlined ppvs as the A? 300k range. Cotto vs Martinez did 350k buys. Klitschko can’t even sell a ppv , hahahahaha.

Bernard Hopkins is 50 and hasn’t sold a ppv in nearly a decade. In terms of combat sports, he is certainly not a bigger name or draw right now. You have to go back into ancient history for all of your angles, it is pathetic and reflective of the sad state of boxing.

Everyone, (myself included) questioned how McGregor would deal with the elite wrestling of Mendes and he proved his guard is solid and he looked very impressive. That win was legit and he is clearly a high level fighter. He actually matches up a lot better with Aldo than he does with Mendes because Aldo loves keeping the fight standing. I see McGregor taking it. He

I know you are retarded and all, and are someone who can’t comprehend what he is seeing in these fights, but McGregor first off, McGregor’s style was not a pure boxing base, it was clearly karate/kickboxing. I know this is like explaining something to an infant, but if you watch his approach, he uses a lot of point shots from the outside/front kicks(to control distance) and spinning back kicks. The last time I checked, spinning back kicks were not permitted in boxing. Also, you are an even bigger moron because this guy has been cross trained in mma for a decade.

What you are getting from that fight is different from what any functional human is getting from that fight because you are a retarded, nutjob, fruitcake.

Amateur boxiing<<<<<<<middle school wrestlers in real fights.

More meds dude, you need them.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what it does. I think it will do very well, not as good as some of these trolls are proclaiming but I wouldn’t be stunned if it did 1m buys.

I just don’t see boxing ever again getting to these crazy Mayweather numbers. The reason why he was able to draw those two massive numbers and also consistently putting up 1m buy fights is because of two factors: 1. He never lost and was the best boxer at his weight for years. 2. He can sell a fight as well as anyone because of his obnoxious behavior. Who is on the talent level of Floyd Mayweather that is around right now? There is no one and someone like him rarely comes along.

GGG may be(in a more exciting style also), but how long can he fight like that for? He is 33 and hasn’t headlined a ppv yet, nor has he fought any really big names yet(not his fault, but never the less). By the time he headlines a ppv, he’ll probably be 34-35.

Canelo is very overrated and gets gifted decisions every time he fights a technical fighter like Trout or Lara. It is just a matter of time before he loses consistently to boxing’s elite. When that happens, his star power will fizzle. Plus, he is not the A draw that Mayweather or Pacquaio are, not even close yet. A win against Cotto will help bring his name up and then maybe he could do Pac numbers, but without speaking English fluently, it is going to be hard for him to be a Mayweather caliber star even if he were to win consistently against top talent. He appeals to the Mexican-American audience, but really not much else.

Keep in mind that it took Mayweather/Pacquaio years to become ppv stars and prior to that the state of boxing in terms of ppv was horrible. They were doing 1-2m buys per year as a whole. Those two have been the only ones over the past 7 years to sell a big ppv in boxing and when they go, boxing’s ppv will take a major hit. I believe that is why Haymon had this PBC idea brewing.
