JMM-Alvarado on HBO score 1.2 million viewers

May 21, 2014 by Jason Cruz 25 Comments

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports reported via Twitter that Saturday night’s HBO Boxing event featuring Juan Manuel Marquez and Mike Alvarado averaged 1.2 million HBO subscribers.  The peak for the event taking place at the Forum in Inglewood, California was 1.3 million.

To be exact, Iole reports the fight averaged 1.198 million and the peak was 1.322 million.  The undercard featuring Viktor Postol and Selcuk Aydin scored an average of 1 million viewers with the peak for Postol’s victory at over 1.1 million.

For those wondering, JMM made $1.4 million this past Saturday while Alvarado made $650,000 according to the California State Athletic Commission (via Bad Left Hook).

Payout Perspective:

Solid numbers for HBO as it competed for sports viewers with NBA Playoffs and the Bellator PPV. Juan Manuel Marquez is still a name that can draw viewers (especially the strong Mexican fan base) and with the winner potentially facing Pacquiao next, there was some added interest.  The fight did not disappoint as both fighters went down in consecutive rounds.

It was a great fight so i am glad it got good exposure. 2013 was a great year for both HBO & Showtime, I’d like to see a comparison when this year ends — maybe throw in previous years as well.

@Logical: Will work on this. Thoughts on how Froch-Groves will do this weekend? It is on Saturday afternoon but I suspect the replays should do well.

Froch-Groves 2 is set to do some damage on Sky PPV numbers in the UK and Ireland. Amazing that they are looking at 1 million buys ($24 million) from a country of 68 million total.

Where are you getting your estimates from Sampson? Although it is expected to be a major Box Office success, not in a million years are they getting 1 million buys considering the majority of boxing fans go to bars in these countries to watch the fights. Also you don’t seem to have good knowledge of the UK to think it’s a country. It is made up of 4 countries England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

D why are you repeating what I wrote? Great numbers! Yup boxing is hurting. Many a person In Ireland feel N Ireland is still Ireland google that, your the idiot. Doesn’t really matter plenty of Boxing fans hardcore in both countries. prediction Froch/Groves fight outdoes any UFC fight for 2014. Can you imagine what will be wagered on it, many pounds and Euros! It will come close or even outdo the top 2 UFC ppv in 2014 and its 2 bums imo their purses will out do all the UFc Champs combined. I wonder what scalped tickets are going for? And what sponsorship is paying? Dam must be a small fortune.

Amusing. Repeating? No. More like informing. What is funny is that you are unaware of the difference between Ireland(also known as The Republic of Ireland) and Northern Ireland. Google it? Go to any encyclopedia or wikipedia and look up Ireland and see what comes up. It will always be the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland. Now, go look at what your boyfriend posted(and clearly was saying based on his separation of the UK and Ireland. Nice try dummy.

Prediction for Froch/Groves fight outdoes any UFC fight in 2014?? HAHAHAHA!! You wish. No way that happens. Again, you’ve even acknowledged in your past posts how little the UK and the rest of the International market is compared to the US. It is a joke. This is the fight of the century and it still doesn’t compare to the big ufc ppvs. Let’s say that this fight hits a million ppvs in the UK(which is most likely an exaggerated expectation) that still only equates to 500k ppv buys for the UFC. Zuffa will do at least 2 if not 3 events this year that surpass that despite losing their two biggest stars. Seeing how ppv is the biggest generator of revenue for both sports, your expectation is dead wrong.

    You aren’t very bright.

Froch Grove sells 60,000 tickets in less than one hour! Thats massive!! Webley stadium is gigantic, Pac man vs Floyd wouldnt do those numbers, how the hell is any MMA card ever going to do that? Never happen unless they outlaw boxing and the NFL, And this is a shit fight with 2 fixed bums! Amazes me!

It isn’t a matter of seeing, it is a forgone conclusion. You are just too stupid to realize the reality of the small market in the UK. You impress your sorry band of boxing obsessed imbeciles with your lack of knowledge. Always amusing for a guy who doesn’t know the difference between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Pac-Floyd won’t do those attendance numbers, it terms of gate, they would at least quadruple it.

Is any MMA card ever going to do that? Uh, yeah. Pride Shockwave ’02 did 91k in attendance, significantly more than Froch-Groves. Will any boxing event from here on out do that? Will you ever learn basic information about either sport? I doubt it.

No, probably not UFC paid boy, how pathetic you get paid to hype a company online and lie and insult people who disagree I guess times are tough, good luck to you. Haha no UFC event will come close, and the said thing is there will be far better UFC fights than this garbage Froch fight. Must suck! How frustrating. Can you imagine 60 thousand tickets in an hour! Epic!

Saldaqueef you are nothing more than a troll that works for Richard Schaeffer. The only liar and exaggerator here is you. Then when someone like me calls you out on your lies and bullshit, you cry about it.

60k tickets in an hour, the biggest fight in UK history arguably, and there will be at least 2 ufcs this year in arguably their worst year in the past 8 years that will generate more revenue than that fight.

    Troll on boxing fanboy.

Saldaqueef is part of boxing’s welfare to work program. He trolls mma websites with his neurotic tirades accusing chestnuts of being lazy and then when someone hits him with facts and statistics that prove his absurd statements wrong he goes on another tirade claiming the other person is Dana White, etc.
