The UFC has announced that it will be promoting two fight cards on the same night on May 31st. Both cards will be overseas as one occurs in Brazil while the other will take place in Germany.
The card from Brazil will be the culmination of the third season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil as Wanderlei Silva will take on Chael Sonnen. The second card will take place in Berlin, Germany. No fights have been announced for that event. MMA Junkie suspects that the German card will be UFC Fight Night 41.
It’s not clear whether both cards will take place live on the UFC Fight Pass or whether one will air on FS1 and the other on Fight Pass.
Payout Perspective:
The announcement that the UFC will be doing double duty on May 31st falls in line with its busy international schedule which includes 6 European UFC events in 2014. The UFC’s focus with these events is to the local regions and not the North American audience. So, while it may not have made sense to conduct two events on the same day in the past, it makes sense now if you consider the localizing of the events.

COME ON jason………
you MUST research if youre going to continually leave these payout perspectives strewn about each article………

What does that have to do with the article dumbass? Yes it was done before. He never said he wasn’t done before only that it didn’t make sense before. Ban this tool!

Long gone are the days where i would look forward to every match-up on a card including the prelims — where i would countdown the days to an event and watch the press conference, weigh-ins, interviews with the fighters, etc. Now i am skipping events even if they are offered for free, just not interested.
It seems that if the UFC has its way it is going to be some kind of an all-year-long-weekly thing, with nothing but watered down cards and a billion seasons of TUF to promote them all while playing the same ridiculous music over and over and over again.
TRUTHspitter says
it didnt make sense before?!? it made quite perfect sense in reality.
two seasons of the ultimate fighter were ongoing and their finales happened on the same day
btw, who are we to say the event planning doesnt make sense???
exactly, none of you have an answer for that………
the so called “analysis” on this site is quite “loose” and “rugged” so to speak imo
besides, the way jason phrased that gives the impression it has never happened before
i suppose that tends to happen when your “analysis” is quite paltry in its formation

TRUTHspitter,
This site doesn’t pretend to be perfect, but for my money it’s the best around. If you can do better, by all means, do better. Maybe we’ll all gravitate towards your site. But if your posts are any indication, I think you’re probably doing the right thing by sitting on the sidelines.
“it made quite perfect sense in reality. two seasons of the ultimate fighter were ongoing and their finales happened on the same day”
They could have very easily been scheduled for different days. They did not “happen” they were scheduled.
“btw, who are we to say the event planning doesnt make sense???”
We’re fans, predominantly from North America, who follow the sport and put money into the Zuffa’s pockets. And it doesn’t make sense from a North American ratings perspective when shows happen on the same day as opposed to having them on different days. Hence Jason’s point – which is on-point – regarding it not making sense before from a North American perspective, but making sense from a local market perspective.
“exactly, none of you have an answer for that………”
See above.
“the way jason phrased that gives the impression it has never happened before”
Read more carefully. I understood him just fine.

Logical,
Do what I do, DVR them and then you can fast forward to the good parts.

The 2 events per day thing worries me – mainly from a quality control perspective.
The problem with having so many events is there are not enough top-level fighters available to showcase. Sure there are “fighters,” but they are nowhere near the caliber the UFC would hire, just a few years back. It seems that as time progresses, we go from having A level fighters in the UFC to B and now maybe even C. The sport is too new and there just isn’t enough talent available.
If they get a bunch of regional fighters in Germany to fight on their card then this dilutes their brand. UFC has gone from being a best of the best only promotion to a regional circuit. Mixing in a Dennis Siver with no names doesn’t create a good image.
I know they want to expand globally but when not focus on a few markets at a time instead of just doing everything at once.

TruthSpitter,
I noticed you corrected me but didn’t give me dates as to when the 2 events happened in 2012. Are you referring to UFC on FX 6 and the TUF Finale which were held on Friday and Saturday in December 2012? Are you stating that they were on the same day where you reside? As I recall they were aired on back to back nights in the U.S.
Thanks for reading. If you would like to visit other sites focusing on MMA with more analysis you are certainly welcome to do so.
BrainSmasher says
That’s true Jason. Thos events were within like 24 hours of each other but not on the same day. Even more the guy acts like you were oblivious to the fact when there was articles right here on this site about it.
Leon,
I understand your point. Back 10 years ago almost every fight on a card could headline some events todays. That said it is something we have to get used to. Every sport has had to go through the same problem. The need for more product to match demand waters down the product. There is people in the NBA who say the league is easier that back in the day. The reason is there are more teams today. Which means the best players are not piled on 12-16 teams. BUt spread across 30 teams. PLus you have hundreds of players brought in the league to fill those teams that were not NBA level before. But it has to be done and people eventually get used to it. BUt it is a hard pill to swallow for hardcore old fans.
Up until the last year or two. I had seen every major fight in MMA from all the major promotions in mma history. I could look at any card and break down the pros and cons of every fighter on it and recall every one of their fights. That just isn’t the case anymore. I still watch the events. But there is just to many fighters, especially new fighters to remember. Because many of the noobs will be released after a few fights. It isn’t worth trying to remember them until they get a few wins and rise above the other noobs. So every card there is guys with a few fights that I don’t remember at all even though I have sit through their fights.
The good news is those guys ave a chance to make a name for themselves and move up and eventually be someone. Its not the worst thing in the world to have those on the bottom of the card and watch and see how they play out and who preforms.

@BS – That’s why we keep you around. 🙂

logistics plays a huge part when planning an event. Availability of venues, day of the week, local holidays all kinds of things must line up.
