Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Timothy Bradley-Juan Manuel Marquez fight taking place on PPV on Saturday, October 12th received 375,000 PPV buys. According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, the PPV buys generated $21.75M.
The estimated PPV buys is a good number considering Top Rank estimated the buy rate to be 350K-450K.
According to Top Rank’s president Bob Arum, the break even point for the PPV was 350K buys. But, Rafael’s article which interviewed Arum indicated that robust closed circuit numbers drew down the break even PPV mark to 275K PPV buys.
Bradley’s manager, Cameron Dunkin was pleased with the apparent result and thought the event would draw less buys.
Via Yahoo! Sports:
“I’m very, very happy with that,” he said. “Going in, I thought it would do 250, maybe 300. Those wouldn’t have been bad numbers, either. But this is a very solid number and I’m glad to hear it did so well.”
In addition, Rafael reports that Juan Manuel Marquez earned $6 million and Timothy Bradley earned $4.1 million.
Payout Perspective:
The first takeaway about this result was the fact that the new standard price for boxing PPVs is $65. With the Mayweather-Alvarez fight going for $75 a month prior and doing 2.2 million PPV buys, the 375K PPV buys has to be considered an accomplishment considering the higher price point and that it was not a Pacquiao or Mayweather fight. With the $21.75M figure, this amounts to $58 per PPV ($65 is the HD price, $55 or $60 was the non-HD price depending on your provider). We will see how this affects future PPVs and whether the UFC is looking at this and thinking about raising its price point.

Its amazing how little room they have to make a profit. The fighter pay is so high. The promoters taking a huge risk. 1 little hiccup and they lose their ass.

Hahaha…boxing tv rights worldwide is much bigger….so there are a lot of ways were boxing gets its money from…
Check how may foreign commentators are during live boxing events they come from different countries and they give local version of commentary of the fight…..
“..one hiccup and they lose their ass” yeah right…bob arum has been around since Ali Almost 40 years….It’s good business arum earns the fighter earns….UFC pays peanuts….haha

Yes Bob Arum broke even lol not in 30 years! I wounded what his salary was for promoting the fight, his consulting fee’s his marketing fees? his loan percentage of the money he put out? He pays himself a salary and takes all kinds of back end money from every aspect of a fight! Funny how a snake like Arum still manages to pay his fighters, Dana and Zuffa are girl scouts compared to this guy.

They shit all over the UFC LOL!

40 years? Why is his network barley more than Dana Whites? Dana has 9% of the UFC and only been doing it 10 years. Arum is 80 years old and been doing it a lifetime with all those mega boxing events. I guess most of tat money comes from ripping off new fighters. No one fights in the UFC for $500.
So Arum makes like 1 million for every year old he is. LOL that’s not very much considering how much the main event makes. Granted he doesn’t do much compared to the UFC and the fighter could easily replace him with a number of other promoters and not miss a beat. While the UFC cant be replaced without losing 75% of revenue!
Sounds like both sports pay structure is exactly the way its supposed to be. Imagine that. Every gets what they bring to the table.

First off UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY SEE SOMEONES TAX RETURN OR FINANCIAL STATEMENT NO ONE HAS ANY IDEA HOW MUCH ONE MAKES OR IS WORTH!!!
So everything you are saying is basically complete made up press hype nonsense. How much is TOP Rank worth? How much is the UFC worth? They are worth whatever the owner says its worth, in other words NO ONE KNOWS exactly! Yes BOB Arum pays boxers problably less than 500 bucks, what does that have to do with anything? He also has fighters all over the world fighting in every level there is. His world champions make millions son! And some have made millions for decades! Its is really unfair to compare him to Dana or boxing to mma. Its like comparing Soccer to female beach volleyball. Arum is one of the guys keeping MMA out of NY for your information, he has more power and influence and money then all the clowns at Zuffa, and he always always will. Top Rank is a dynasty in sports, I am no fan of Arum, but did you know that Don King was one of the first promotors to pay multimillion dollar purses, to the dismay of Arum and others? If MMA stays around and grows which I hope it does it will need competing promotors, not promotions. So if the UFC goes under you are basically saying the sport is done? Doesn’t say much for mms as a sport now does it then.
BrainSmasher says
Arum ha no where close to the money of the Fertitas. So you are pretty much talking out your backside. Both Fertitas are BILLIONAIRE’S. Zuffa, or the 3 amigo’s, have more than 10 times the money as Arum does. That’s not counting Flash Entertainment who is part owner of the UFC now.
No, MMA doesn’t die with the UFC. It will just be like boxing. A bunch of random promoters and fights with no organization to get tv deal or grow as a whole. JUst a bunch of individuals hoping they can make a name for themselves off the back of old names because they have no way to reach fans.
Diego says
Both Fertitas are BILLIONAIRE’S
Yes, because they inherited their parents’ casino business.
I don’t think Zuffa has 10x more money than Arum. And there is no way that you know for sure one way or the other.
saldathief says
True, one can not really know what is actually made, even a public company lies to its stock holders, we have seen it time and time again. Lets see if Zuffa is still around in 30 years promoting fights, I hope they are. I wish MMA would over pass boxing but I doubt that will ever happen, they just are not doing it smart. They also need to get rid of that stupid 5 min round its just dumb!
