UFC 153 numbers: gate, attendance and bonuses

October 14, 2012

MMA Junkie reports that attendance at the HSBC Arena in Rio di Jineiro, Brazil garnered 16,844 fans for a gate estimated between $2.5-$2.6 million.  In addition, Jon Fitch, Erick Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Rony Jason earned bonuses for the night.

Fitch and Silva won Fight of the Night with the rebirth of a new Jon Fitch.
Big Nog showed Dave Herman that jiu jitsu works with an armbar for Submission of the Night.
Rony Jason, TUF Brazil winner, earned a third-round TKO over Sam Sicilia.

All bonuses were $70,000.

Payout Perspective:

A good night of exciting fights capped by Anderson Silva and Big Nog getting the crowd into a frenzy with their wins.  The Brazilian crowd was hot as usual and even provided golf claps for Phil Davis after subbing Wagner Prado.

Not bad for such a main event mismatch… MMA goes the way of boxing. 13-1 favorite.

Sell the attraction, not the sport.

Then you should have felt right at home watching such a mismatch. Also Just because sports books have that as the odss doesnt mean he was that much of a dog. Bonnar had ways to win and was really only a 7-1 in my book. This wasnt close to being the biggest mismatch in MMA or UFC history but the odds have it as being such. Serra was a much bigger dog because going in he had no way to win. What he ended up using to win was something no one knew he had and he had shown not to have had it in the past. Behind closed doors he devloped his striking and power. But going in based on his past he had no chance at all. Bonnar had a chance to grind out the fight like he has done and logically could have done and had th chin and toughness and aggression to go after it. Bonnar has no less chance that Okami had to beat Silva.

Actually I felt right at home watching Rios-Alvarado on Saturday which was a -150 fight. It was a far more exciting fight than the best of what the UFC has EVER offered.

Never heard of them. But thanks for letting me know. I was wondering what old people were doing that night!

Got something to say?
