MMA Fighting reports that Conor McGregor has obtained a boxing license from the California State Athletic Commission. However, he was not issued a boxing license in Nevada.
California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster confirmed the news that McGregor has a license.
The news comes after McGregor was stripped of the UFC Featherweight title. Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis will vie for the interim Featherweight title with the winner likely facing Jose Aldo to unify the Featherweight title. McGregor has not defended the title.
However, the Las Vegas Journal Review reports that McGregor was denied a boxing license in the state of Nevada. In part, the denial is due to the outstanding fine assessed McGregor from the bottle-throwing incident at the UFC 202 press conference. In addition, Bob Bennett, NAC Executive Director, stated that he would have to assess McGregor’s boxing ability.
Payout Perspective:
Obtaining a boxing license appears to be the next move in McGregor’s strategy to gain more leverage with the UFC. The never-ending rumor that McGregor may fight Floyd Mayweather, Jr. with this news. Will it happen? I doubt it unless there are substantial monetary guarantees and legal hurdles are addressed. From a legal standpoint, the UFC would likely step in to prevent a McGregor boxing fight from happening since he is under contract with the company. Of course, McGregor would fight this. But, I would suspect that the license is more of a way to annoy UFC management.

UFC will eat off Conor either way.

Good for him, his style is definitely that of a counter puncher in the southpaw platform and he is head and shoulders above anyone else on the male side in the UFC. He should challenge himself and see what he can do in boxing….no matter what, if he gets a few pro fights, that will make him that much more dominant in the octagon.

How come McTapper doesn’t call out GGG? Here’s a joke… Who’s the most popular mma fighter???
Floyd mayweather lol, these guys never stop bringing his name up
d says
Mayweather brought up McGregor’s name first. He was jealous that Conor is the bigger draw.

Mcgregor looking to go to the global combat sport….money is in boxing hahaha
Fight Fan says
d ufc fighters have been name dropping mayweather for years to bring attention to their fights. Then when they get knocked out they go quiet (rousey, McTapper).
d says
Wrong again FF, Mayweather started all of this back when Liddell was king, trashing him and the sport, then White had Sean Sherk challenge Mayweather to a fight in the UFC, and he shut his mouth very quickly.
Fight Fan says
Why would he fight Sherk who was a juicer? Lol
And I said Mctapper, as usual you change it around
Either way Floyd gets paid and all of those guys wish they hit the Mayday lottery
d says
How do you know Mayweather wasn’t?
“And I said Mctapper, as usual you change it around”
Unreal:
“d ufc fighters have been name dropping mayweather for years to bring attention to their fights. ”
Mayweather ran his mouth first and shut it very quickly after posed with the challenge of an actual mma fighter.
You act like McGregor (and Rousey for that matter) wouldn’t destroy Mayweather in mma.

McGregor knows he is bigger than the UFC, he knows he is who puts butts in buckets, asses in seats, and sells PPVs. He is consistently the biggest draw in UFC and the biggest combat sports draw on the ppv side in the USA. He knows that he deserves a cut of the company, and he knows that the bigger paydays are in boxing. If he were to land a big fight in boxing, he could potentially make 10 times anything he has made in UFC on fight pay alone, never mind the sponsorships that he would gain from companies like Hublot, Rolex…and I guarantee you Jordan would have a look at him for their company as well along with GGG and Ward. McGregor moving to boxing becomes one of the highest 10 paid athletes in the world as long as he wins. Boxing is not where it was from 1880s to the 1990s in the USA, there is no getting around this…however, it is truly one of the big global sports like Soccer. There is something about boxing that pulls in big money, high rollers, and appeals to more cultures and nations than just a few. A fight between McGregor and a fringe contender becomes a PPV affair. If I were him, i would say goodbye to UFC…there is really not much more he has to prove there. He is one of the few UFC fighters whos style is heavily based on boxing and could actually do well in the Sweet Science. Even his personality fits better with boxers who come from the same poor “street/hood” upbringing he has. Can you imagine him in a fight with talkers like Malinaggi? Or with Adrien Broner? Can you imagine him and Garcia’s father or Gurerro’s father at a press conference?

How are the bigger paydays in boxing other than a potential fight with Mayweather? McGregor makes more money per fight right now than anyone in boxing. He already is one of the highest 10 paid athletes in the world, he made over 30m this year. His fan base is in mma, not boxing. Boxing stars make a higher split over promoters, but it still (again other than a fight with Mayweather) can’t produce those types of figures that he makes in mma. Is he really going to make something like 15-20m per fight boxing someone like GGG? He would have to rely on mostly boxing fans and they do not seem to be too interested in watching him box anyone other than Mayweather. The fact is, he made crazy money this year- more money than any boxer did.
