The good news is that the momentum seems to be continuing for both shows despite going head to head.  AEW came back from posting just 668,000 viewers last week which may have been due to the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday.

NXT wins ratings head-to-head versus AEW pre-Thanksgiving

December 2, 2019

NXT on the USA Network scored its second head-to-head ratings win against AEW on TNT.  Despite the overall viewership win, AEW edged out NXT in the younger demos.

NXT drew 810,000 viewers on the USA Network the day before Thanksgiving.  AEW on TNT drew 663,000 viewers.  AEW did earn a slight victory over NXT in the Adult 18-49 demo 0.26 to 0.24.  It also edged it in the male 18-49 demo 0.33 to 0.31.  There was more of a gap with the younger ages as the Adult 18-34 demo drew 0.16 for AEW while NXT had 0.12.  The WWE-product still manages to grab a larger over 50 demo drawing 0.40 versus 0.25.

Payout Perspective:

An interesting turn which will have AEW fans a little concerned although the Wednesday before Thanksgiving television can be thrown out due to audience fluctuation due to many traveling or doing other things before the holiday.  For NXT fans, the interspersing of WWE talent on NXT programming has helped boost interest and ratings.  We will see if this trend continues for NXT.

WWE NXT edges out AEW for first time in head-to-head

November 21, 2019

WWE on NXT drew 916,000 viewers while AEW drew 893,000 viewers.  The A18-49 demo was close with AEW still ahead of NXT 0.39 to 0.30.

Payout Perspective:

Good news for WWE although it had to recruit its “main roster” talent as it promoted its PPV this weekend.  Yet, NXT has been closing in on surpassing AEW.  The demos are worth looking at as AEW is still popular among the younger demo which is something that the WWE highlights with its Smackdown rating.

Payout Perspective:

It appears that AEW is finding a solid audience and is popular with the younger demo in live head-to-heads with NXT.  What is interesting is that NXT is doing well with the over 50 demographics as its outdrawn AEW every week in head-to-head.  Still, the AEW product is performing well and has to be pleasing TNT executives.

AEW, NXT post ratings gains from last week

November 8, 2019

AEW saw its first uptick in ratings in its 6th week according to Nielsen.  The ratings were up to 822,000 viewers on TNT while NXT on USA also posted gains with 813,000 viewers.

The two-hour telecast on TNT saw an increase in its viewership from last week.  It saw slight increases in viewership in the A18-49 demo. With a PPV on Saturday night, it was important that ratings increased as it geared toward its first PPV during its run on TNT.

NXT on USA also saw a boost in ratings as its ratings were within striking distance of AEW’s for the first time with the two competing.

AEW and NXT down due in part to World Series

October 31, 2019

AEW Dynamite on Wednesday night drew 759,000 viewers on TNT according to Nielsen.  NXT on the USA Network drew 580,000 on a night when Game 7 of the World Series drew over 23 million viewers on Fox.

It was the lowest rating for both wrestling telecasts. Notably, the ratings for the Game 7 World Series between the Nationals and Astros was the lowest rated Game 7 in sometime although it was a boost for Fox ratings.  The World Series drew 23M viewers on Wednesday night.  Yet, its still the biggest audience for baseball in two years.

Payout Perspective:

The decline in ratings last night was expected considering the enormity of Game 7 in baseball.  Still, both telecasts have not posted an uptick in ratings over the previous week which should be a concern for both.  AEW is still holding strong with its ratings and we should see one or both of the shows rebounding in the ratings.

AEW and NXT both tumble in TV ratings

October 24, 2019

The Wednesday night professional wrestling wars continued although both shows experienced a decrease in viewership which might be attributed to the return of the NBA and Game 2 of the World Series on Fox.

AEW on TNT drew an overall viewership of 963,000, its first time under 1 million viewers.  On The USA Network, NXT drew 698,000 viewers which is a decrease from the 712,000 viewers the previous week.

Payout Perspective:

AEW was still in the Top 5 of the cable ratings on Wednesday night.  The two NBA games on ESPN drew 1.698M (Bos-Phil) and 1.345M (Den-Por) respectively followed by American Horror Story on FX (1.350M) and then AEW.  NXT fell farther down drawing just 698,000.  The World Series on Fox drew 11.78M viewers which likely added to the competition on Wednesday night.  It will be interesting to see which of these shows will pull itself out of this tailspin in ratings.
