Pacquiao could make $30M Saturday in HBO PPV first event overseas

November 23, 2013

The NY Times reports that Manny Pacquiao could earn close to $30 million on Saturday night when he fights Brandon Rios in his return to the ring.  The article also addresses the many obstacles on putting on a PPV abroad.

Pacquiao is guaranteed $18 million with “an upside closer to $30 million.”  More important is that unlike his U.S. fights, he will not have to pay U.S. taxes.  Pacquiao would have been taxed in the highest U.S. tax bracket (39.6 percent).

The scheduling is the biggest change from American events as the fight will take place Sunday around noon.  Thus, the fighters will have to change their usual customs on fight day.

HBO “shipped in 300 cases of equipment.”  This included even makeup for on-air talent in the event they could not get it locally.  Instead of the regular 100 employees used for fight night, 40 employees were flown in to deal with logistics of engineering and production.

Payout Perspective:

Pacquiao’s salary pales in comparison to Floyd Mayweather’s payout of over $40 million in his last fight with Canelo Alvarez.  Still, Pacquiao will not have to pay taxes on almost 40 percent of his earnings.  With all of the investment HBO is doing for this PPV the payoff is the potential future it may have in China.  Chinese boxer Zou Shiming who main evented Top Rank’s rehearsal in the area with two fights this year will be on the undercard and will likely grab almost as much fanfare as Pacquiao.  If the card does well, it will provide an alternative that Bob Arum can use as leverage in the future.  Certainly if Pacquiao wins, his next fight may be closer to home.

Wow that seems like low interest in one of boxing’s biggest draws… 3.7 M viewers in a country of over 1 BILLION?!

Or is that channel not available to the whole population?

the largest TV audience for a sporting event in China this year, with an average audience totalling over 30 million watching as Marcello Lippi’s side edged out FC Seoul.

the second leg drew an average audience of 23.68 million viewers on CCTV-5.

And with several other channels in China also showing the game live, the match attracted the highest average audience in China since the 2004 AFC Asian Cup final at over 30 million viewers.

IF you made an honest living Tops, you wouldn’t be so worried about others pay checks! Get off welfare and contribute to society!

This site is for discussing the business of MMA. Salaries are part of the business of MMA. If you don’t like salary discussions maybe you would be happier posting on MMAJunkie or Sherdog.

Manny allegedly owes $50 million to the government. Interesting……yet completely sad.

I love salary discussion. But that isn’t what Tops is doing. If you cant see the difference then there is a problem. Tops isn’t trying to discuss anything at all. HE is making smart ass comments simply because he doesn’t like MMA. He is being a troll and it doesn’t matter what the fighters would make he would still make troll comments and does so on every thread. As big a troll Sampson is, I think Tops should actually be banned. He hijacks every thread with ignorant comments and is never involved with any discussion.

I don’t see how you think someone constantly putting down MMA for not paying what boxing does, is a discussion.

Top rank would promote twice in Macau in 2014…and in October in Singapore….zou shimming and the Japanese Olympic gold medalist would probably headline the events….Zou shimming got 500k in the undercard in his 3rd pro fight….

Manny dosent owe the Phil gov money…it’s purely political harassment.pacman is with the opposition party and plans to run in the senate in 2016…..

He clearly owes them money. Its not hard to prove he paid his taxes for those years. He refuses to get the IRS to sign off that he paid them because he knows he didn’t and the IRS wouldn’t sign off on it. The fact he hasn’t paid them and his accounts have no money suggest he is hiding what money he does have left. Another crook in boxing. Imagine that!
