Tate replaces Zingano as TUF coach opposite Rousey

May 28, 2013

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports reports that Miesha Tate will replace an injured Cat Zingano to coach opposite Ronda Rousey on the next edition of The Ultimate Fighter. The announcement on Tuesday came as a surprise to Rousey as she was unaware Zingano was injured.

Tate appeared as the replacement coach as filming of the next season of TUF began. Apparently it was a closely held secret that Zingano would be replaced. The pairing is likely the matchup the UFC had wanted prior to Rousey-Zingano based on Tate’s rivalry with Rousey.

The coaching spot comes with odd timing as Tate is schedule to fight Liz Carmouche at UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle this July. Could we see Tate being pulled to preserve her for Rousey in the next couple days?

Payout Perspective:

Many are skeptical with the timing of the replacement. But based on Zingano’s twitter feed, the injury looks substantial.

The question of why didn’t they just put the two (Tate-Rousey) together as coaches instead having a stipulation for the Tate-Zingano match? Yes, one might argue that Tate was winning that fight but Zingano pulled it out. So now it looks a little suspicious that despite a loss she’ll get a title shot.

Putting how we got here behind us, the show should now be a certified train wreck in the most positive sense (think Rashad-Rampage). The combustible hate-hate relationship of Tate-Rousey and the male-female fighters living in the same house should get enough storylines and press that FS1 needs to get its network up and running.

seems like recent seasons require a new gimmick to keep our interest in this show.

  2. BrainSmasher on May 29th, 2013 2:12 AM

What TUF season or anything on Tv didn’t have a gimmick? If the purpose of the show is the fights. TUF 1 had the gimmick of being new, other seasons had coach rivalries or fighter rivalries or alcohol or Kimbo. One persons gimmick is another persons story lines. Nothing survives on tv without a selling point. No one every said that selling point was going to be a dozen or so fighters no one ever heard of. Something has to get eyes on these unknown fighters so they become known and stars down the road.

  3. adder on May 29th, 2013 5:25 AM

so you’re saying everything on TV has a gimmick so we shouldn’t point out what the UFC has obviously been up to with TUF recently?

TUF 17 where they had the fighters families cage side, trying to set up a coach shit talking rivalry that never materialized. how about Dana’s efforts to hype up the “Beast” that everyone was afraid of.

now this next season will have women coaches, women contestants and another set up coach rivalry. and how about saving the Tate reveal for the 1st day of shooting to get that all important TV ad moment of Rousey storming out of the room.

come on, these things are gimmicks designed to keep ratings up for a show that has been slipping.

btw, what’s with always being the pissed off UFC apologist?

He is a shill like a good percentage of all online UFC supporters are.

It is quite sad to see so many apologists

  5. BrainSmasher on May 30th, 2013 12:20 AM

It’s tv! What the he’ll do you expect? Here is a secret. Late night talk shows bring in bigger stars during “sweeps”. Sitcoms have special guests to boost ratings. Who would have ever thought a tv show would be trying to get ratings? Yeah you are right. TUF doesn’t want anyone to watch and should be making the show the least interesting as they can get. Why are you so gullible? I bet you think this show is really “Reality” too right?

  6. adder on May 30th, 2013 5:31 AM

You’re trying too hard. What the Networks do during sweeps and what the UFC has done with TUF are not the same. again you’re being the pissed off apologist. relax, take a deep breath. no one is trying to take your precious from you.

network shows are pulling one-off stunts to boost ratings during a period. TUF has and is being altered for the duration of its season. like I said because it has been slipping so they feel the show needs more significant changes to slow that decline.

a better comparison would be to look at the alterations networks tend to make to their slipping shows. you know, the sorts of changes that lead to a show jumping the shark.

no one is saying that the UFC should not make these changes, lets just be real and admit why they make them.

  7. BrainSmasher on May 30th, 2013 4:18 PM

They make then for fan interest which is the point of any television show. Ratings and interest go hand in hand. If these moves wasn’t what the people wanted then they wouldhnt increase ratings. The UFC has always given the fans what they want. They have always put the biggest stars or dramatic fighters or fight as coaches. You just cant admit to being a negative drama queen. You even complained about them announcing Cats injury. “and how about saving the Tate reveal for the 1st day of shooting to get that all important TV ad moment of Rousey storming out of the room.” You don’t even know the entire story. But I guess you don’t need to when you just want to rant against something for no reason at all. When did cat get hurt? You don’t know. You pretend like they sit on this for weeks. She got hurt and filming was starting and that was the best place to let everyone know. This is a show that is filmed with results being secret. They cant exactly start sending that info all over the place. There is process’. Like getting Tate to coach. If it has to be done. Why not save it for the show? It is very relevant to the show and should be on there for the casual fan. The UFC didn’t bust her knee caps. They could have set this fight up all along if they wanted to. To sit and act like this is some conspiracy for ratings makes you look foolish. They shouldn’t have to run their company inefficiently just so you don’t get the impression “its just a ratings grab”.

Yes it was fortunate that Tate will be the coach and yes getting Rouseys response will be good TV when it airs. Are you going to tell us next the NBA had best of 5 and 7 games to build drama and get ratings and more money? I guess we can count on you for all the latest scoops!

What a ridiculous response. I punched a hole in your sweeps comparison so you make no attempt to defend that. but you still want to keep the argument going so you reach back to attack something I said 2 comments ago.

You try to find fault with that comment by bringing up all sorts of nonsense that is irrelevant to the point of the comment. My point was that they kept the news secret FROM ROUSEY in order to get her surprise reaction on camera. That was the gimmicky stunt.

“You pretend like they sit on this for weeks.” when did I do that? also, irrelevant. “They cant exactly start sending that info all over the place.” when did I suggest they should? also, irrelevant. “The UFC didn’t bust her knee caps. They could have set this fight up all along if they wanted to. To sit and act like this is some conspiracy for ratings makes you look foolish.” when did I say the injury and the replacement was a UFC conspiracy? also, irrelevant to my comment.

oh btw, lets bring up a funny side issue. you said, “This is a show that is filmed with results being secret. They cant exactly start sending that info all over the place.” um…didn’t they kinda send that info all over the place? we don’t know about this turn of events because episode 1 just aired. so much for, “This is a show that is filmed with results being secret.”

    you’re silly.

  9. BrainSmasher on May 31st, 2013 8:54 AM

You didn’t pinch holes in anything. You only made excuses for your ignorant observation. I would understand your point of the UFC lied about the injury to alter the show. But bitching because they make the best of the situations presented them is pure stupidity.

  10. adder on May 31st, 2013 12:44 PM

Wow, what a very well argued counter….LOL.

    Clearly you’re out of steam.

That my friends is what losing an online argument looks like. Ignore your crumbled arguments, ignore your opponents point and just stubbornly press on but without substance. No attempts at well argued counter points.

The silly pissed off apologist crumbles.

  11. BrainSmasher on May 31st, 2013 3:36 PM

I just remembered the old saying about arguing with a fool. You said something stupid and obvious and thought you were enlightened. I pointed out your ignorance. No need to go back and forth and stoop to your level. Im sure you will be crying next season with the UFC again try to make the best TUF possible. Yes they use popular coaches to get ratings. Yes they try to find good fighters to get ratings. Yes they edit the show to make it more appealing to get ratings. Anything else you would like to tell us that we already know?

  12. adder on June 1st, 2013 12:10 AM

Says the guy who started the argument to begin with.
After he dug his heels in, had his foolish comparison pumped full of holes and said various silly things.

Suddenly NOW he calls this stooping to a lower level. NOW, suddenly he has no need to go back and forth. After it didn’t go so well for him. Funny how that works. You know, if you really want to avoid stooping I have a sure fire way for you. You could simply take that pissed off UFC apologist hair trigger of yours and dial it back a bit.

The way you start arguments all through this site and get into trolling wars is the definition of stooping to a lower level. It’s kinda what you do on MMApayout.

Does EVERY comment slightly unfavorable to the UFC require a Brainsmasher counter attack? which invariably leads to insults and general trolling BS. Seems that way my now suddenly above it all friend(till the next unfavorable UFC comment).

Remember, deep breaths, deep breaths. And maybe you just might succeed in avoiding your usual stooping.

  13. BrainSmasher on June 1st, 2013 12:39 PM

You said recent TUFs need a new gimmick to keep out interest. Fact is the UFC did the same thing with Kimbo. They had all the fighters on the show then brought him out to get the fighters reaction. That was TUF 10 and sure as he’ll wasn’t recent. There has always been a “new” gimmick to keep us interested. Lauzon being on the show with the coach he beat In Pulver was a new gimmick. As was having Brock as a coach. Changing rules to keep popar guys on the show. Then they had a guy who did gay porn one season. So like I said you were wrong and you got proven stupid. The UFC is doing what they have always done. Except this season they have more to work with since the rise of Rousey and woman’s mma which made the coaches possible and the coed cast members possible.

  14. adder on June 1st, 2013 5:21 PM

So if you have been essentially in agreement with me from my 1st comment that the UFC recently used gimmicks and other changes to help TUFs ratings. what exactly has been the point of your disagreement?

I said, “seems like recent seasons require a new gimmick to keep our interest in this show.” The essential purpose of my comment was to point out the many recent changes, many of them gimmicky, made to TUF in order to stem the tide of it’s recent declining ratings. Which I further clarified when I said, “these things are gimmicks designed to keep ratings up for a show that has been slipping” and ” like I said because it has been slipping so they feel the show needs more significant changes to slow that decline.” As in the recent weak TUF live and TUF 16. But you still maintained your disagreement through all this.

From what I can tell there is only one real point of disagreement or should I say point of resistance on your part. you seem to want to avoid saying that these many recent changes, many of them gimmicky, were made to stem the tide of a declining show.

Yet it was not that long ago that you were arguing in another story that TUF should be replaced by another show. That the show had declined so much that the name TUF itself was poison.

check out what you said in the TUF Live Ep. 11 story written May 21, 2012.

“I think they are going to have to replace TUF with another program. FOX and the UFC have an agreement for this show. But clearly it cant continue for 9 years. They want an over haul. But at this point even if they were able to create the next big thing. It would be doomed under the TUF name. People are tired of the concept which TUF indicates and now TUF numbers have dropped so low there are to few people to even see the changes and no one will go back to see any changes later. This is clear by how things went this season. The season is actually good. Yet ratings decline. Then when the fights are great there was no one watching. When people do hear the fights and the season are good they are so tired of the name and format they just done care. They will have to replace TUF with another Idea. With these ratings and such a large drop in a single week and being so far behind previous years. I think we can offically say the series has been ran into the ground. It is to the point that word of mouth cant save it and changes would be pointless.

TUF is like that friend you once had that took the wrong path. You had lot of good times together but you went your seperate way. Now you hear he is off drugs and got a good job and is a real good guy now. You are happy for him but you have moved on and have no interest in being friends again. TUF getting those friends/fans back will be impossible.”

Here you are clearly in agreement with me that the show was in decline. And saying it in far more “negative drama queen” and “crying” terms then I ever did. So what’s your beef then if you agree with me on my 2 essential points? You just don’t want to connect the dots?

If they had taken your advice and killed TUF rather then making and continuing to make several recent significant changes would I also not be making a fair analysis by connecting those dots? And remember I do not fault the UFC for these changes as I made clear here,”no one is saying that the UFC should not make these changes, lets just be real and admit why they make them.” You’re so lost in your UFC apologist role that you can’t even be a tiny bit reasonable.

I mean, what is TRUELY at the HEART of your problem. For that I must go back to my last biting reply.

“The way you start arguments all through this site and get into trolling wars is the definition of stooping to a lower level.

You’re don’t stoop to any low level friend. You’ve been there all along. You wallow in it and you love the view.

How’s that for telling you something we ALL already know.

  15. BrainSmasher on June 1st, 2013 9:55 PM

Im not reading all that bullshit. I agree they use gimmicks if you want to call them that. But i do not agree they are recent. It is the same “gimmicks” they have always used and every show on tv use. Which is anything that works without ruining their credibility. Which is why i responded to your comment. They haven’t hurt their credibility and there was no point in saying anything. IF the UFC was manipulating the circumstances to get the coaches they wanted like faking this injury. I would see reason to complain. BUt they are using the hand they are dealt and making the show more interesting by their decisions.

  16. adder on June 1st, 2013 10:54 PM

“Im not reading all that bullshit.”

Oh but I know you did. It’s a classic “exit strategy” to pretend otherwise though. So I’ll accept it and take my bow.

Right now I got ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ blaring. Feels good man, feels real good.

Got something to say?
