New York City's First MMA Expo Next Week

October 17, 2009

CBS New York is reporting that the MMA WORLD EXPO is coming to the Jacob Javits Convention Center in the heart of New York City on October 24 and 25:

Mixed martial arts, the fastest growing sport in the world, takes its surging popularity to the Big Apple on October 24th & 25th at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Martial arts enthusiasts from around the world will gather in the nation’s sports, fashion and financial capital for NYC’s first-ever mixed martial arts expo & conference.

Payout Perspective:

Although the conference includes live presentations by various experts, including American Top Team’s lead boxing trainer and Olympic gold medalist Howard Davis, Jr., one of the main goals of the clinic is education: MMA competitions remain unregulated and thus illegal in what is potentially one of the most lucrative markets for the sport, New York State.

Paul Paone, MMA WORLD EXPO founder and director, hopes to demonstrate to those with regulatory influence that MMA, far from being barbaric, represents a healthy form of athletic competition.

The Expo includes a panel discussion entitled The Future of MMA, and CBS reports that there will be NYSAC representation on the panel.

Dana White has made it clear he believes the legalization of MMA competition in New York State is an inevitability.  Indeed, UFC is so certain of imminent legalization that Madison Square Garden itself serves as the major arena of competition in the mega-hit UFC videogame Unidsputed 2009, this despite there never having been an MMA contest staged in the famous arena.

Assuming, as we probably must at this point, that the Commission is open-minded and operating in good faith, this is perhaps the best MMA-related news the state has yet to see.

Here’s hoping it’s only the beginning.

I am from New York and I have been hearing about this from a bunch of fans, but this is the first time I am actually seeing a press release on the convention. In the future I hope the hosts of this promotion could give better notice and information as well.

I would have basically promoted this event for free, because this is a great event for our sport and it’s fans.

Missing out the fact that CBS can use this to promote Strikeforce’s Nov 7th show on CBS as well.

If you’re heading to this event in NYC, come and look for MMA Business magazine, and tell us about your interest in the industry. We will see you there!

Got something to say?
