I disagree with you, David and Zac. The only division that the WEC will fold into the UFC in the near future will be lightweight. That will fill up 20 or so fighters of the 40-50 that they need to add to get to 3 shows a month in 2010. They will also continue to add fighters in every division, but especially heavyweight to ensure that Fedor has no one recognizable to compete with. (The next best thing to signing him directly is to sign all of his most interesting opponents over time.)

Before they merge the lightweight division though, they will develop their own WEC flyweight version of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Versus, obviously under a different name and slightly different format. Urijah is made for tv and he'll have his chance soon.

One of the problems not considered in this article is the need to pay the former WEC-now current UFC fighters on a higher pay scale. The WEC was getting by on 150k-200k payrolls in small venues before. Once these guys get rolled into the UFC, their pay necessarily has to increase. Money makes these things happen, and it seems like the central issue is whether having WEC fights in the UFC will increase PPV buys enough to match or exceed the profit earned by the WEC, given the increased overhead of not only having a larger roster, but giving the 40-50 new UFC fighters a sweet raise.

David,

I agree, the UFC has room for the current WEC fighters, especially with the anticipated increase of events. I also like the re-branding idea, it is something I mentioned not long ago, stating, "And if it really would be too much trouble to come together, Zuffa should just dissolve the WEC name, start calling it the UFC, have Dana White and a few famous fighters show up at the events, and bam the same product is instantly and infinitely more successful."

Obviously easier said than done, but it kind of makes sense.
